The bridge in pink

A sunset over the Tag river, Lisbon, Portugal.

A story behind: We spent a couple of days in Lisbon. Going to the capital is always "such fun" ( please don´t laugh but I am a huge Miranda TV series fan ): new restaurants to discover ( Cantinho do Avillez was such a nice surprise ) and new places to explore ( Lx Factory ).  
Late afternoon I went to photograph the Vasco da Gama bridge. Took my full stop filter and had fun. The sunset was pinkish. Enjoy.

I try not to punch my photos with too much saturation so usually I downgrade the saturation by generally accepted rule of thumb 10-15%. Set the aperture at 18 to get most of the sharpness from my lenses. Full stop filter gave me a nice 260 seconds shutter speed.

Lisbon - Vasco da Gama bridge

Vasco da Gama bridge stretches for 17 kilometers and is one of the longest structures in Europe.

A story behind: Monday. Very early morning. Shooting photos with Mariusz at the bank of the Tagus river, at one of my favorite spots close to the Vasco da Gama Bridge.
The light was far from perfect with almost clear sky. The sunrise was quick but spectacular. I used B&W preset in my camera.

The westernmost point of the continental Europe

Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point if the continental Europe, Portugal. Ursa beach.

A story behind: This is one of the most spectacular locations for landscape photographers in Portugal - the Ursa beach situated in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, 60 kilometers west of Lisbon. On the right of the picture one can see a huge rock with a natural Bear (Ursa) shape and another rocky formation on its side, named Gigante (Giant).

Sunrise over the Tejo river.

A story behind: Three different things went wrong yesterday morning. First the sky: no clouds nor river fog and consequently no natural light filtering, just hard and unpleasant feeling. Second the temperature: we are still in the middle of the summer so 20º C at 6.30 in the morning may be normal for this time of the year but it is a "killing machine" for photography. And finally the low tide that I have encountered that morning deteriorated the reflection of the bridges in the water.

In such difficult conditions it is important to remember to be very precise with the initial color settings during exposure and the shutter speed to balance the unwanted light and weather conditions.

Champalimaud Foundation, Lisbon ( part II )

Champalimaud Foundation, Lisbon.

A story behind: The Champalimaud Foundation in Lisbon was accomplished in 2010. It is a multidisciplinary center for research of excellence, with the best possible conditions to attract and retain the best researchers, academics and medical doctors from Portugal and abroad in the fields of neurosciences and oncology. Magnificently located at the bank of the Tagus river, very close to the famous Belem Tower, the modern architecture of the buildings attracts the eye.

A story behind: The Lisbon Oriente ( East ) train station is one of the landmarks of the city and a truly unique work of one of the genious architects of the contemporary world: Santiago Calatrava.

Lisbon, the second day.

After a short morning walk in the oldest district of Lisbon, the Alfama, where my wife went a little bonkers looking for a pretty kitchen stuff in small shops for her photographic kitchen displays (Kuchnianadatlantykiem.com) we returned to the Chiado district.

Alfama - the oldest but most picturesque Lisbon´s district.

We decided to have a lunch in the restaurant located on the top floor of "Hotel do Chiado". This is one of the greatest charms of Lisbon: you can sit on the terrace with lovely views over Lisbon and the Tejo river, slowly sip the local Portuguese wine, snacking cheeses and bread. Restaurant "Entretanto" ( which in Portuguese means : "So ...") with a kitchen set up by winning the best Portugese cook 2009 award, Igor Marinho, was worth a try. We drunk Fiuza 3 Castas red wine, with lovely strong, very fruity smell and notes of many spices in the mouth. Wine was short but was perfectly synchronized with both my Argentinian stake as well as with Agnieszka´s bacalhao fish.

Views from the terrace over the city were beautiful. Straight ahead you one could see the castle of Lisbon and below Rossio neighborhood and to the left the cathedral and the river Tejo.

The weather was good. It was a lovely afternoon. Date: Saturday, November 13, 2010. Maciek.

Three days in Lisbon and Cabo da Roca ( part 1 )

It was a quick decision: we packed our thing and drove south. Two and a half hour´s later we arrived in Chiado/Bairo Alto, the most beautiful district of old Lisbon. The weather was great. Some clouds in the sky but November temperatures in their high teens. Later we had a wonderful 2 hours long lunch at the Ibo Restaurant with the view over the Tejo river. This is one of the best places in Lisbon to taste Mozambican flavors. Simple things like good company, nice weather, relaxing atmosphere, a lot of light inside restaurant and a bottle of a wonderful white Quinta da Bacalhoa 2008 wine made these moments truly unforgettable. After lunch we had a relaxing stroll up and around elegant Chiado neighborhood not so much packed with tourist at this off-peak season time of year. Date: Friday, 12th November, 2010. Maciek.

Photo trip to Central Portugal - almost a complete failure

I have been planning this trip for some time. I clearly marked all my photographic spots on the map and was ready to go. The plan was to shot some photos in Sintra National Park and near Sado River National Reserve.
It ended up in an almost complete disaster.
For three following days the weather was bad: strong winds, fog, low dirty clouds and occasional terrencial rain.


Only during short periods of reasonable weather I managed to put my camera on the tripod and take some photos.

This first picture is from Adraga beach in Sintra National Park. The beach is located not far away from the Westernmost Point of Continental Europe - Cabo da Roca.
At 4 p.m. I parked my car not far away from the beach. The weather was stormy. To my surprise the parking lot was full of cars. There was a young "just married" couple on the beach with friends and family taking pictures.
I passed the crowd and went straight to the rocky part of the beach. Soon the party was over and I stayed alone. The winds were high and the waves were massive.
